About Sussex Motor Yacht Club
Founded in 1907, the Sussex Motor Yacht Club is proud to be the world’s oldest motor yacht club—a distinction that reflects more than time; it represents a rich legacy of maritime innovation, honour, and fellowship.
Bringing together those with a shared passion for motor yachting—past, present, and future—the Club has long been a home for pioneers, nobles, and enthusiasts drawn to the sea and the spirit of progress. Today, it continues to uphold that tradition while embracing modern ideals, including sustainability and technological advancement.
The Club is one of a select few with the right to grant use of the undefaced Blue Ensign—a rare naval honour that symbolises distinction, trust, and historic ties to the Royal Navy. It remains a visible emblem of the Club’s standing and heritage.
At its heart, SMYC fosters a welcoming, sociable community. Whether you own a superyacht, motorboat, sailing vessel—or no vessel at all—you’ll find a warm spirit of camaraderie here. Our members range from novices to seasoned mariners, united by a love of the sea and a willingness to share knowledge and experience, both afloat and ashore.
Our Emblem: The Burgee
The Club’s burgee features six martlets and a propeller on a white shield, set against a royal blue background. The martlet, a heraldic bird said never to land, symbolises endless curiosity, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge—values reflected in the Club’s earliest members.
Indeed, SMYC’s founding years were defined by innovation and ambition. With support from notable figures such as Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster—who served as Commodore for a decade—and David, Prince of Wales, the Club rapidly established itself as a hub for competitive motor yachting and technological advancement.
Looking Ahead
Whilst we remain proud of our distinguished past, we are equally focused on the future. Today, the Club is committed to championing sustainability and cleaner marine technologies, using its platform and heritage to support the Green Agenda and promote responsible yachting for generations to come.
